RoadDemo

RoadDemo is a demonstration (visual aid) app for learning to drive. It includes a range of scenarios (based on UK road layouts) as well as allowing you to make your own by adding to the existing scenarios or importing your own image (e.g., satellite imagery).

Four-way roundabout in RoadDemo, with a red car on the roundabout and yellow car waiting Here, the red car is an automated car added with one of the ‘+’ buttons in the scenario, and the yellow car is controlled by the user.

Into these scenarios you can place various objects including:

You can also draw on top of your scenarios.

Any addition you make to a scenario can be saved so you can easily access it in future, and can be exported to share with other users of the app.

Where Can I Get It?

RoadDemo is available now as an early preview so that I can get feedback. It is still in development - some things may not work as expected, and there are likely to be many changes before the app is fully released.

There are currently two versions of the app:

Web

If you just want a quick look, check out the web version here.

This runs as a website directly in your browser, so it can run on most devices. It is functionally identical to the Android version, but in some cases doesn’t look as good (and may perform worse on slower devices). See more information about using this version here.

If you find any bugs, or have any other feedback on the app, please email me at feedback@roaddemo.uk

The web version is provided on a “pay what you think it’s worth” basis - please feel free to check it out for as long as you like, but if you find it useful, please go to ko-fi.com/roaddemo to make a contribution.

Android

The Android version isn’t available publicly on the Play store yet, but I’m looking for volunteers to help test it before it can be publicly released. If you’d be willing to download the app, play around with it, ideally open it regularly over the next few weeks (but no commitment needed), and let me know about any bugs or any other feedback, please email me at feedback@roaddemo.uk.

Other platforms

So far I am not targetting a release to the Apple App store as I don’t anticipate much demand, (from what I have seen most are happy with another suite of apps which fulfil a similar purpose). Apple device users can still use the web version, and if you try that out and like it, please let me know (feedback@roaddemo.uk); I’m happy to release to the App Store if there is enough demand.

Note that the web version can be used on desktop/laptop devices as well, but the app does not fully support keyboard and mouse control. If this would be useful to you, please let me know.

Accessibility

I am particularly keen to receive feedback on any accessibility issues with the app. Please email feedback@roaddemo.uk if you have any suggestions so I can ensure this app can be used by anyone who might benefit from it.
